Chirivel is a municipality in the province of Almería, within the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is located in the northern part of the province, in an area that forms part of the transition between the higher terrain of the Sierra de María and the broader plateau country of the Altiplano de Granada.
Like other municipalities in the region, Chirivel is administered as a local entity under Spanish municipal law, with its own ayuntamiento (town council). The surrounding comarca is characterised by a dry, continental Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cold winters, and by a landscape of cereal fields, almond and olive groves, and scattered pine woodland.
Chirivel lies on the historic route that linked the Andalusian interior with the Levante coast, a corridor followed in modern times by the A-92 motorway and other roads crossing the Almería–Granada boundary. The municipality is one of several small settlements in the north of Almería province that share this strategic position between the Andalusian highlands and the Mediterranean lowlands.
