Beires

Spain

Beires is a municipality in the province of Almería, within the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is one of the small inland settlements that make up the Alpujarra Almeriense, the Almerían portion of the Alpujarra district that stretches across the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada.

The village sits at roughly 900 metres above sea level on the western edge of the Sierra de Gádor, above the Andarax river valley. Its whitewashed houses are built in the traditional Alpujarran style, with flat roofs and chimneys, clustered on the hillside below the ruins of a Moorish castle. The surrounding landscape is one of terraced slopes, almond and olive groves, and arid mountains.

Beires is reached by road from the provincial capital, Almería, via the Andarax valley and the neighbouring municipality of Almócita. Like other villages in the area, it preserves elements of its Moorish past in its street layout and architecture, and its economy has traditionally depended on agriculture.
