Bayarcal

Spain

Bayárcal is a municipality in the province of Almería, within the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is one of the small settlements that make up the Alpujarra region on the northern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, near the border with the province of Granada.

The village sits at high elevation in mountainous terrain, surrounded by the whitewashed, flat-roofed architecture characteristic of the Alpujarras. Its economy has traditionally been tied to agriculture, particularly the cultivation of almonds and other crops suited to the dry, elevated landscape, along with livestock.

Like many municipalities in inland Almería, Bayárcal is small and rural, with a population that has declined over the twentieth century as residents moved to larger cities. It remains a quiet, traditional Andalusian village rather than a major tourist destination.
