Almáchar is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It lies approximately 35 kilometres from the city of Málaga, the provincial capital, and has a population of roughly 2,100 residents. Natives of the area are known as Almachareños.
The town's name derives from the Arabic word machar, meaning meadow, a reflection of the region's Moorish past. Almáchar is known as the capital of the moscatel raisin area, a designation tied to the local production of raisins from moscatel grapes.
