Polanco

Spain

Polanco is a municipality in the autonomous community of Cantabria, in northern Spain. It lies within the coastal region of Cantabria, near the Bay of Biscay, and forms part of the comarca of Besaya, an area centred on the Saja and Besaya river valleys.

The municipality had a population of 5,585 inhabitants as of 2013. Like other Cantabrian municipalities, it is made up of several population centres or localities rather than a single urban core, and its administrative seat is the town of Polanco.

Polanco is best known as the birthplace of the fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, who was born there in 1895. The house where he was born is preserved as a museum dedicated to his life and work, making the town a point of interest for visitors following the designer's history.
