Villafranca

Spain

Villafranca is a town and municipality in northern Spain, located in the province and autonomous community of Navarre. It lies in the historic Merindad of Estella, in the western part of the region.

The town sits along the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, and grew up around that route. Its historic centre retains traditional Navarrese architecture, including buildings associated with its role as a stopping point for pilgrims.

Villafranca is one of several Spanish towns bearing the name Villafranca, which means "free town" and refers to settlements granted special charters in the medieval period. It should not be confused with larger places of the same name elsewhere in Spain.
