Leitza

Spain

Leitza is a town and municipality in the province and autonomous community of Navarre, in northern Spain. It is located in the mountainous north of Navarre, in the Basque-speaking area of the region.

The town sits in the Leitzaran valley, through which the Leitzaran river flows, close to the border with the province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country. The surrounding landscape is characterised by green hills and wooded slopes typical of the Atlantic climate zone of northern Iberia.

Leitza is known in particular for its connection to the sport of wood chopping, or aizkolaritza, a traditional Basque logging competition, and the town has produced a number of prominent competitors in the sport. It also holds an annual fiesta in honour of its patron saint, San Miguel, which features traditional Basque music, dancing and rural sports.
