Etxalar

Spain

Etxalar is a town and municipality in the province and autonomous community of Navarre, in northern Spain. It is located in the mountainous north of Navarre, in the Pyrenean foothills near the border with France.

The municipality is known for its traditional rural character and for the vulture trapping tradition practiced at the nearby San Juan Xar pass, where netting techniques have been used for generations to capture migrating birds. The town itself retains a historic core with stone houses and a church.

Etxalar is part of the Bortziriak (Cinco Villas) area of Navarre, a district of small towns sharing a common Basque cultural and linguistic heritage. The surrounding landscape is dominated by forests, pastures and the Atlantic climate typical of this part of northern Spain.
