Zug

Western Sahara

Zug is a municipality in the far south-east of Western Sahara, approximately 170 kilometers from Atar in Mauritania. It is situated in a remote region of the territory and serves as a settlement in one of Western Sahara's least densely populated areas.

The municipality is notable for its proximity to the only erg, or sand sea, found in Western Sahara. This extensive dune field runs from south-west to north-east, crossing from Mauritania into Western Sahara and back into Mauritania again, with the border forming a distinctive right angle in this area.

Zug is located within the portion of Western Sahara controlled by the Polisario Front, which refers to this region as the Liberated Territories. The area remains subject to the ongoing dispute over Western Sahara's sovereignty.
