Valga is a town located in southern Estonia, serving as the capital of both Valga County and Valga Parish. The municipality covers an area of 16.5 square kilometres and has a population of 12,261 residents.
Historically, Valga was joined with the nearby Latvian town of Valka to form a single town until they were separated in 1920. Today, the two locations maintain a relationship as twin-towns. Following both countries' accession to the Schengen Agreement on December 21, 2007, all border-crossing points were removed and the roads and fences between the two nations were opened.
