Eloy Alfaro

Ecuador

Eloy Alfaro is a city in the Manabí province of Ecuador. It is one of the cantons of that coastal region, located in the western part of the country. The settlement is named after José Eloy Alfaro Delgado, an Ecuadorian politician who served as President of Ecuador from 1895 to 1901 and again from 1906 to 1911.

Alfaro, often called "The Old Warrior," led the Liberal Party and played a central role in the Liberal Revolution of 1895. He opposed the pro-Catholic conservatism associated with President Gabriel García Moreno and fought against political conservatism in Ecuador for nearly 30 years. The city's name thus commemorates a figure closely tied to the country's liberal political history.

As a canton of Manabí, Eloy Alfaro forms part of the administrative structure of one of Ecuador's coastal provinces. The surrounding area lies in the western lowlands of Ecuador, a region that includes the Pacific coast and inland agricultural zones.
