Jimani

Dominican Republic

Jimaní is a city in the Dominican Republic and the capital and second largest city of Independencia Province. It lies in the western part of the country, near the border with Haiti.

The city serves as one of the two main border crossings between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. A duty-free open-air marketplace operates on the border with Haiti, making cross-border trade a notable feature of the area.

Jimaní suffered significant damage in a flash flood on May 25, 2004. The flood struck during the night, killed many residents, and washed away hundreds of homes.
