Celle

Germany

Celle is a town and the capital of the district of Celle in Lower Saxony, located in north-central Germany. Situated on the banks of the river Aller, a tributary of the Weser, the town has a population of approximately 71,000 residents.

The city serves as the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath and is notable for its historical architecture. It features a castle built in Renaissance and Baroque styles, as well as a picturesque old town center containing more than 400 timber-framed houses. These structures make Celle one of the most significant locations along the German Timber-Frame Road.

Historically, Celle served as the official residence of the Lüneburg branch of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg from 1378 to 1705. The dukes were relocated to this site after being banished from their original ducal seat by the town's inhabitants.
