Famagusta is a city located in the Famagusta District on the eastern coast of Cyprus, currently under the control of Northern Cyprus. It lies east of Nicosia, the island's capital, and is notable for possessing Cyprus's deepest harbour.
During the Middle Ages, Famagusta served as the island's most important port city and functioned as a crucial gateway for trade with the ports of the Levant. The city played a significant role in the Silk Road network, with merchants using it as a transit point to carry goods from Eastern sources to Western Europe.
