Mitú is the capital town of the department of Vaupés in southeastern Colombia. Located in the Amazon Basin at 180 meters above sea level, it sits on the banks of the Vaupés River and was founded in 1936. As a small town, Mitú serves as the administrative and service center for the Vaupés Department.
The town functions as the primary hub for essential services and government operations across the sparsely populated Vaupés region. Its remote location in the Colombian Amazon makes it an isolated settlement, accessible mainly by river and air transport. Mitú represents one of the few urban centers in this vast tropical region.
