Bolívar is a city in the Valle del Cauca Department of Colombia. It lies in the western part of the country, in the Andean region that the department occupies, and is one of the department's smaller municipalities rather than one of its major urban centres such as Cali.
The name Bolívar is shared with several places in Colombia, most prominently Bolívar Department on the Caribbean coast in the north of the country. That department, which is a separate and much larger administrative entity, extends from the Caribbean coast at Cartagena near the mouth of the Magdalena River southward along the river to a border with Antioquia Department. It is bordered by Sucre and Córdoba to the west, Atlántico to the north and east, and Magdalena Department across the Magdalena River to the east.
The city of Bolívar in Valle del Cauca should not be confused with this northern department, nor with other Colombian localities bearing the same name.
