Shiyan is a prefecture-level city located in northwestern Hubei Province, China. It occupies a strategic geographical position, bordering the Henan province to the northeast, Chongqing to the southwest, and Shaanxi to the north and west.
As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 3,209,004. The built-up area consists of two urban districts, Maojian and Zhangwan, which house approximately 1,033,407 residents across 1,193 square kilometers. The district of Yunyang is not considered part of the conurbated area.
The city gained recognition in 2007 when it was named one of China's top ten livable cities by the Chinese Cities Brand Value Report. This distinction was officially released during the 2007 Beijing Summit of China Cities Forum.
