Beida

China

Beida is a town in Hainan, the island province in southern China. It lies in the province's western interior, within Changjiang Li Autonomous County, near the Baoban area and close to the Bawangling mountain range.

The settlement is best known for its proximity to Bawangling National Nature Reserve, one of the last strongholds of the Hainan black-crested gibbon, a critically endangered primate found only on Hainan Island. The surrounding landscape is mountainous and forested, and the local economy has traditionally centred on agriculture and the resources of the nearby hills.

Beida is reached by road from Changjiang's county seat, Shilu, and from other towns in western Hainan. It remains a small, quiet place rather than a major tourist destination, and it is distinct from the far larger and better-known Beida, or Peking University, in Beijing.
