Datong is a prefecture-level city in northern Shanxi Province, China. It lies in the Datong Basin at an elevation of about 1,040 metres (3,410 ft), bordering Inner Mongolia to the north and west and Hebei Province to the east.
At the 2020 census the city had a population of 3,105,591, of whom 1,790,452 lived in the built-up area formed by the urban districts of Pingcheng and Yungang. The remaining urban districts, Yunzhou and Xinrong, are not yet conurbated with that built-up area.
