Chengjiang

China

Chengjiang is a city in Yuxi, Yunnan Province, China, situated just north of Fuxian Lake. It is the seat of Chengjiang County-level City, an administrative division under the jurisdiction of Yuxi.

The city lies in the central part of Yunnan Province, on the northern shore of Fuxian Lake, one of the deepest freshwater lakes in China. Its location near the lake gives it a mild climate and makes it a gateway to the surrounding lake and mountain scenery.

Chengjiang is best known for its association with the Chengjiang fossil site, a Lagerstätte of early Cambrian age that has yielded exceptionally preserved fossils of soft-bodied marine organisms. The site, discovered in the Chengjiang area, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is of major importance to the study of the Cambrian explosion.
