Sydney is a former city located on the east coast of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. It now functions as an urban community within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The settlement was founded by the British in 1785 and later incorporated as a city in 1904, marking its period of formal municipal status.

In 1995, Sydney ceased to exist as an independent municipality when it was amalgamated into the Cape Breton Regional Municipality on August 1st of that year. Despite its status change, Sydney remains a significant urban center on Cape Breton Island's eastern coast.
