Belmopan is the capital city of Belize, located in the Cayo District approximately 80 kilometers west of Belize City. Founded in 1970 and officially inaugurated as capital in 1972, it is one of the world's newest national capitals and holds the distinction of being the smallest capital city in continental Americas. The city was built as a planned community following Hurricane Hattie's devastation of Belize City in 1961, with the site chosen in 1962 to provide cyclone protection and facilitate inland industrial development. The city's name combines "Bel" (Belize) and "Mopán," referencing the Maya tribe indigenous to the region.
With a 2022 population of 20,754, Belmopan is the second-largest settlement in Belize and is the fastest-growing population center in the country. It sits at 76 meters elevation in foothills of the Belize Maya Mountains within the Belize River Valley, offering cool nighttime conditions. The city is planned around a ring road with good signage and features building codes requiring concrete construction to reduce fire risk. Government employment forms the economic backbone, though the city has developed banking, retail, and call center industries. Nearby attractions include Guanacaste Park, St. Herman's Blue Hole, Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, and numerous Maya archaeological sites including Caracol and Xunantunich.
Belmopan serves as a central hub for ecotourism and is regarded as one of Belize's safest cities, attracting growing numbers of retirees. The diverse population includes Creoles, Mestizos, Mayas, and other ethnic groups, with English as the official language. The city hosts several annual events including Belmopan Day celebrations in August and the Belize Agriculture and Trade Show in May, the largest fair in the country.
