The settlement was established in the late 19th century by immigrants, primarily from Venice and Prussia. The municipality's name serves as a tribute to the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi and his Brazilian wife, Anita Garibaldi. The region is notably recognized for its production of wine and sparkling wine.
