Maragogipe is a municipality located in the state of Bahia within the Northeast region of Brazil. It covers an area of 438.18 km² and has a population of approximately 44,793 people, resulting in a population density of 110 inhabitants per square kilometer. The municipality is situated 130 km from Salvador, the state capital, and borders the Paraguaçu River near the Baía de Todos os Santos.
Historically, Maragogipe served as a significant center for the production of tobacco and sugar cane. During this period, the region was characterized by large slave-holding plantations. Following the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888, the local Afro-Brazilian population remained in the area as tenant laborers. These residents faced systemic hardships for decades, often restricted from fishing or cultivating staple crops.
