Alvarães is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, located in the country's Amazon region. It is one of the many municipalities that make up the interior of Amazonas, a state dominated by rainforest and river systems.
The municipality covers an area of 5,912 square kilometres. Its population was recorded at 16,220 in 2020, giving it a low population density typical of the region. Alvarães is situated in the western part of Amazonas, an area characterised by the Amazon basin's rivers and dense forest cover.
Like other municipalities in the state, Alvarães is administered as a single municipal unit encompassing both its urban centre and the surrounding rural and forested territory. The area's size relative to its population reflects the sparse settlement pattern found across much of Amazonas.
