Pilar is a municipality situated in the state of Alagoas in northeastern Brazil. Covering an area of approximately 249 square kilometers (96 square miles), the city had a recorded population of 35,212 as of 2020.
The municipality is historically noted for its role in Brazilian legal history. On March 28, 1876, Pilar was the site of the last official execution in Brazil, which involved the hanging of an enslaved man named Francisco.
