Burnie is a port city situated on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia. It ranks as the fourth largest city on the island and serves as a regional hub located approximately 325 kilometres north-west of Hobart and 147 kilometres north-west of Launceston. The city is positioned just 47 kilometres west of Devonport.
Originally founded in 1827 as Emu Bay, the township was renamed in the early 1840s in honor of William Burnie, a director of the Van Diemen's Land Company. It was officially proclaimed a city by Queen Elizabeth II on April 26, 1988.
As of the 2021 census, Burnie has a population of 19,918 residents. The municipality covers an area of 600 square kilometres and is administered by the City of Burnie.
