Virgen

Austria

Virgen is a municipality in the district of Lienz in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It lies in the Virgen valley, part of the Venediger Group mountain range, and extensive parts of the municipality fall within High Tauern National Park.

The area's history reaches back to around 500 BC, when copper mining played an important role. After the end of the Roman period, Slavs settled in the Virgen valley and were gradually assimilated by Baiuvarii settlers from the 8th century. The Christianization that accompanied this settlement led to the creation of one of the region's first parishes. During the Middle Ages Virgen was part of Carinthia and the County of Gorizia, and by 1500 it had been annexed by Tyrol.

With a population of 2,200, Virgen is the fifth largest community in east Tyrol by population. Agriculture and tourism both play important economic roles, though a lack of jobs and structural problems result in a very high commuter rate. Virgen has several times won awards as the most beautiful municipality in Tyrol.
