Schönwies is a municipality in the district of Landeck, in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It lies in the western part of the country, roughly 8 kilometres northeast of the town of Landeck and about 7 kilometres west of the town of Imst.
The area's main source of income is the mining of limestone ballast stone, a material used in railway construction and similar applications. This extractive activity distinguishes Schönwies economically from many neighbouring communities in the Landeck district.
The municipality's position between Landeck and Imst places it within the upper Inn valley, a corridor long used for transport routes through the Tyrolean Alps. Schönwies is one of several small municipalities that make up the district of Landeck.
