Rottenmann is a town in the Austrian region of Styria, situated near the Rottenmanner Tauern mountain range. It lies in the south-central part of the country within the federal state of Styria.
The settlement was first mentioned in a document in 927, making it one of the older recorded places in the area. In 1279 it was granted its town charter by King Rudolf von Habsburg, an event that formally established its status as a town.
Its location near the Rottenmanner Tauern, a group of mountains in the Central Alps, is among its defining geographic features. The town's long documented history and its early charter are the most notable facts about it.
