Ranten is a municipality in the district of Murau, in the Austrian state of Styria. It is located in the mountainous region of Upper Styria in the south-central part of the country.
The municipality is situated in the Mur valley area, a landscape characterized by Alpine terrain and small, dispersed settlements typical of the rural communities in this part of Austria. Like other municipalities in the Murau district, Ranten is administratively organized as a single local authority covering the town and its surrounding area.
Ranten is one of several small municipalities that make up the Murau district, a largely rural and sparsely populated part of Styria. The area is known for its Alpine setting and traditional Austrian village character, though Ranten itself remains a minor and relatively little-known locality within the region.
