Zell am See is the administrative capital of the Zell am See District in the Austrian state of Salzburg, located in the Kitzbühel Alps. The town sits on a peninsula formed by the Schmittenbach stream jutting into Lake Zell, at the foot of the Schmittenhöhe mountain. With a permanent population of approximately 10,000, it has served as both a winter and summer resort for over a century, gaining particular prominence after the railway line was constructed through the town in 1875.
Today, Zell am See is an internationally renowned holiday destination and one of Austria's most important summer and winter sports resorts. The town's winter appeal centres on its ski resorts, with pistes descending directly into the town, while the Schmittenhöhebahn cable car provides access to Schmittenhöhe in minutes from the lakeside. Lake Zell itself, with crystal-clear water of drinking quality, offers swimming beaches and water sports during summer months, complemented by hiking trails and cycling routes that begin near the town centre.
The town has historically attracted European aristocracy since the 19th century and is now known as a hub of the international jet set. It functions as an important regional transport hub with a train station in the town centre and public transport services throughout Salzburg State. The old town features restored historic buildings, the Vogtturm Museum, restaurants, shops, and various recreational facilities including an indoor swimming pool and casino.
