Pfarrwerfen

Austria

Pfarrwerfen is a municipality in the St. Johann im Pongau district, in the Austrian state of Salzburg. It lies in the Pongau region of the eastern Alps, in the valley of the Salzach river south of the city of Salzburg.

The community is perhaps best known for its parish church, which gives the place its name — "Pfarrwerfen" means "parish Werfen," distinguishing it from the neighbouring market town of Werfen. The village sits at the foot of the Hochkönig massif, a prominent mountain of the Berchtesgaden Alps that rises to over 2,900 metres and dominates the local landscape.

Pfarrwerfen is a small, rural settlement typical of the Salzburg countryside, with a population of only a few thousand residents. It is connected to the wider region by road and rail links through the Salzach valley, and its economy and character remain closely tied to agriculture and alpine tourism.
