Lofer is a market town in the district of Zell am See, in the Austrian state of Salzburg. It lies in the Salzburg Alps region of western Austria, near the border with Germany and close to the Saalach river valley.
As a market town (Marktgemeinde), Lofer holds a status in Austrian administrative structure that historically granted it the right to hold markets. It is one of several small communities in the Zell am See district, a largely mountainous area of Salzburg known for its alpine terrain.
Its location in the eastern Alps places it within a landscape of mountains and valleys typical of the Salzburg region. The town serves as a local administrative and service centre for its surrounding area.
