Wolfern is a municipality in the district of Steyr-Land, in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. It is classified as a third-order administrative region within Politischer Bezirk Steyr-Land, the district authority that governs the area.
The community lies in Upper Austria, the federal state that surrounds the city of Linz and extends toward the Alps in the south and the border with Germany and the Czech Republic in the north. Steyr-Land district takes its name from the city of Steyr, its administrative centre, which sits at the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers.
Wolfern's status as a municipality places it among the roughly four hundred communes that make up Upper Austria's local government structure. As a third-order administrative region, it represents the lowest tier of Austria's formal administrative divisions, below the district and the federal state.
