Weitra is a small town in the district of Gmünd, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It lies in the northwestern part of the country, in the Waldviertel region near the border with the Czech Republic.
The town is known for its historic centre, which retains much of its medieval layout and is enclosed by surviving town walls. At its core stands Weitra Castle, a Renaissance-era residence that dominates the town and is among its most recognisable landmarks.
Weitra's economy and civic life reflect its status as a small provincial town within the Gmünd district, and its well-preserved architecture has made it a minor destination for visitors touring the Waldviertel.
