Weiten

Austria

Weiten is a town in the district of Melk, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It lies in the Wachau region of the state, on the Weitenbach stream, roughly 100 kilometres west of Vienna and about 20 kilometres northwest of the district capital, Melk.

The settlement dates to the medieval period and grew up around a castle that stood on the site from the twelfth century. Its parish church, dedicated to Saint Stephen, was built in the fifteenth century and later remodelled in the Baroque style. Weiten was granted the right to hold markets in the sixteenth century, and the town retains a number of historic buildings from that era, including a Renaissance-era town hall.

Today Weiten is a small market town whose economy rests on agriculture, local trades, and tourism connected to the nearby Wachau valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of terraced vineyards and historic towns along the Danube. The town is connected by road to Melk and to the surrounding villages of the Melk district.
