Staatz

Austria

Staatz is a town in the district of Mistelbach, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It lies in the country's northeastern quarter, within the Weinviertel region near the Czech border.

The town is best known for the Staatz-Kautendorf hill, a limestone outcrop of the Leiser Berge range that rises sharply above the surrounding countryside and is topped by the ruins of Staatz Castle. The fortress, founded in the eleventh century, was later expanded and served as a defensive strongpoint on the northern frontier; its remains are now a local landmark and viewpoint.
