Pöggstall is a town in the district of Melk, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It lies in the Waldviertel, the northwestern quarter of Lower Austria, a region of rolling hills and forested countryside west of the Wachau valley and the Danube.
The town is best known for its castle, Schloss Pöggstall, which stands on a rocky outcrop above the settlement. The castle was long held by the Rogendorf family and later served as the seat of a district court; today it houses a museum and is the site of the Lower Austrian state exhibition on the history of justice. The surrounding area is rural, with agriculture and small-scale tourism forming the basis of the local economy.
Pöggstall is connected by road to the nearby towns of Melk to the north and Ybbs an der Donau to the west, and it is roughly an hour's drive from Vienna. Its historic centre and castle make it a minor stop for visitors exploring the Waldviertel.
