Muehldorf

Austria

Mühldorf is a town in the district of Krems-Land, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It lies in the Waldviertel, the wooded northwestern quarter of Lower Austria, in the valley of the small Mühlkamp river, roughly 80 kilometres west of Vienna and about 15 kilometres northwest of the district capital, Krems an der Donau.

The town is best known for the Mühldorfer Hart, a large forested area to the south that was the site of a late-war concentration camp subcamp and a forced-labour aircraft factory in 1944–45. A memorial and remains of the camp installations are preserved there. The surrounding countryside is agricultural, with vineyards on the terraces above the river valley.

Mühldorf is reached by road from Krems and by the regional railway line through the Kremstal. Its historic centre clusters around the parish church of St. Stephen, and the town serves as a small local centre for the villages of the surrounding municipality.
