Heiligenkreuz is a municipality in the district of Baden, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It lies in the eastern part of the country, within the Vienna Woods region south of Vienna.
The town is best known for Heiligenkreuz Abbey, a Cistercian monastery that is the defining feature of the community and its principal historic landmark. The abbey has given the municipality its name and remains the centre around which the settlement is organised.
Two educational and religious institutions are associated with the abbey and located in Heiligenkreuz: the papal college Benedict XVI, commonly known as Hochschule Heiligenkreuz, and the Catholic Leopoldinum seminary. Together with the monastery, these institutions account for the town's recognised character as a centre of Cistercian and Catholic life in Lower Austria.
