Gurk

Austria

Gurk is a market town in the district of Sankt Veit an der Glan, in the Austrian state of Carinthia. It lies in the Gurk Valley, a side valley of the Drava, and is named after the Gurk river that flows through the area. As of 1 January 2025, the town had a population of 1,178.

Gurk is a former episcopal see, meaning it was once the seat of a bishop. This status reflects its historical role as a religious centre in Carinthia, and it is chiefly known today for its cathedral, the Gurk Cathedral, a Romanesque building that served as the church of the former diocese.

The town remains a small, rural community within the Sankt Veit an der Glan district, with its population and administrative standing as a market town (Marktgemeinde) defining its present-day character.
