Guachipas is a village and rural municipality in Salta Province, in northwestern Argentina. It is the administrative seat of the Guachipas Department, one of the departments into which Salta Province is divided.
The settlement lies in the Lerma Valley, a fertile basin crossed by the Guachipas River, a tributary of the Juramento. The surrounding landscape is semi-arid Andean foothill country, with dry scrub and scattered farmland rather than dense forest. The climate is warm and dry, with most rain falling in the summer months.
Guachipas is best known for the archaeological site of Guachipas, or Las Juntas, where rock shelters preserve pre-Columbian paintings attributed to cultures of the region. The village is small and rural, with an economy based mainly on agriculture and livestock. It is reached by road from the provincial capital, Salta, roughly 100 kilometres to the north.
