Tupungato is a city in the Mendoza region of Argentina. It is the administrative centre of the Tupungato Department, one of the departments that make up the province of Mendoza in the Cuyo region of western Argentina, near the Andean range that forms the border with Chile.
The city shares its name with Tupungato, one of the highest mountains in the Americas, a massive Andean lava dome dating to Pleistocene times. The mountain lies on the Argentina–Chile border, between the Chilean Metropolitan Region and the Argentine province of Mendoza, about 100 km (60 mi) south of Aconcagua, the highest peak of both the Southern and Western hemispheres. Immediately to the mountain's southwest is the active Tupungatito volcano, which last erupted in 1987.
