Mwansabombwe is a town located in the Luapula Province of Zambia. While it is commonly referred to as Kazembe on maps and within the Zambian postal service, Mwansabombwe is the name used by the local Luba or Chibemba-speaking inhabitants.
The naming conventions of the area are rooted in tradition, where settlements were typically named after the chief or headman rather than a specific geographic location. Because the Luba-Lunda people traditionally moved to new sites upon the death of a chief, historical references to "Kazembe's town" may refer to different locations over time. For example, during his visits in 1867 and 1868, explorer David Livingstone recorded "Casembe's town" as being located further north at the site now known as Kanyembo.
