Mumbwa is a town located in the Central Province of Zambia along the M9 Road. The surrounding district occupies a central position bordering several other regions, including Kaoma and Western Province to the west, Namwala and Southern Province to the south, Lusaka and Lusaka Province to the east, Kasempa and North-Western Province to the north, and Kabwe to the north-east.
The area is primarily known for its cotton production and features a ginnery. The district also serves as a location for a Zambia Air Force base and borders Kafue National Park to the west. Historically, the region saw significant prospecting for minerals such as copper and gold; while most small-scale mines are now closed, the gold mine at Luiri has been revived.
The demographic landscape of Mumbwa is diverse, with predominant tribes including the Ila, who speak the Sala dialect, and the Kaonde. Other significant populations include the Lenje, Lozi, Nkoya, Luvale, Tonga, and Shona people, the latter of whom settled in the area as refugees from the civil war in former Southern Rhodesia.
