Yeoville is an inner city neighborhood located in Johannesburg, within the Gauteng province of South Africa. Situated in Region F, the area originally developed as a white working class and lower middle class residential zone as the city expanded northward and public rail access improved.
Historically, Yeoville served as a significant enclave for German and Eastern European Jewish immigrants starting in the 1920s. During the apartheid era, it was designated as a "white area" under the Group Areas Act before transitioning to a "grey area" in the 1980s. From the late 1970s, the neighborhood became a primary nightlife destination for the city due to an influx of galleries and nightclubs.
In the 1990s, a significant migration of the white population to northern suburbs occurred. Today, Yeoville is recognized for its diverse, pan-African population, though it is also noted for facing challenges related to poverty, crime, and urban degradation.
