Winterhoek refers to a location within South Africa, specifically associated with the Groot Winterhoek mountains in the Western Cape province. This mountain range forms part of the Cape Fold Belt and serves as a significant watershed area covering 552,606 hectares.
The range is predominantly composed of Table Mountain sandstone and reaches a maximum height of 2077 meters at Groot Winterhoek peak, situated just north of the town of Tulbagh. The mountains are largely preserved, with up to 83% classified as being in a natural state and 72% under protected status. The towns of Saron and Porterville are located at the base of the range's western side.
