Wilderness

South Africa

Wilderness refers to natural environments on Earth that have not been significantly modified by human activity. This classification typically applies to nonurbanized land that is not under extensive agricultural cultivation. While the term has traditionally focused on terrestrial environments, there is increasing attention being given to marine wilderness.

Current maps suggest that wilderness covers approximately one-quarter of the Earth's terrestrial surface, though these areas are experiencing rapid degradation due to human activity. In contrast, significantly less wilderness remains in the ocean, with only 13.2% currently free from intense human influence.
