Moorreesburg is a rural town located in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is situated approximately 90 kilometres (60 mi) north of Cape Town and currently falls within the Swartland Local Municipality, which is part of the West Coast District Municipality.
The town was established in 1879 on the farm Hooikraal. Following its layout, it was administered by a village management board starting in 1882 before officially attaining municipal status in 1909. Moorreesburg serves as the seat of government for the West Coast District Municipality.
